Cakes With Faces is running #Japanuary2024 and since I’m trying to FINALLY arrange a report of my trip to Japan back in 2016, I thought I could do a double whammy and post a long overdue blog post AND participate in something fun. Day 12 is “Uniquely Japan”.
Foreward: I went to Japan for the first time back in 2016 with a group of friends for about 2 weeks. It was a really fun trip that I wanted to remember forever and so I wanted to blog it but not only was writing hard but a lot of places I was using to host my blogs either removed the feature my entries were hosted on or no longer supported images. I’m looking to save my memories in a physical form in one way or another, but since I’m typing out a sort of journal here it is adapted for the web!
Yokohama day! The plan was to go to Enoshima Island.
I went to Sweets Paradise for the Mob Psycho 100 collaboration going on. I was very confused on how to take part in it and the staff kept trying to explain to me for quite awhile before I finally understood!! Thank you for being so patient with me…
Since it was my first EVER event of this sort let alone MOB PSYCHO 100, my most FAVORITE series of all time up there with One Punch Man, I immediately had my friends take pictures for me.

I believe at this point we headed for Monja Street in Tsukushima. I had never heard of monjyayaki before and it was DELICIOUS!! It was quite possibly one of the most memorable things I have eaten and I’ve been wanting to have it again.
After that we started heading for Shounan! My idol, Imai Tsubasa talks a lot about his love for his hometown and I wanted to see it. I was that obsessed (I still am) about him at the time so off we went! And boy, was it a hometown to be proud of! Immediately we were met with a beautiful rustic kind of setting. The streets we walked down looked exactly like out of a Ghibli movie. The railroad crossings we passed made me feel I could be walking home from school.

As we approached the beach I think we saw some surf shacks. There was a bridge we could cross to get to Enoshima Island, just as I read. It was such an amazing experience. The island itself was gorgeous too. There were cats everywhere and some kind of octopus rice cake sheet was selling well. We spent some time exploring the island which mostly involved walking up steps. It was already getting dark so even though the Sea Candle itself was closed we were able to enjoy the lit views. There was a temple we paid respects to, and then we had dinner. One of us really wanted to have tobiko.

We made our way back to the mainland and we saw two girls trying to set off sparklers. We stopped to ask if they needed help (or if we could join?) So the rest of our night was spent lighting fireworks by the beach. I didn’t think something that I’d seen in anime could be something I actually got to experience!
